Early Years
Helping practitioners support children and young people’s speech, language and communication
FREE resources to support the Early Years Mandatory Pathway 5 (EYMP5) on the Children’s and Young People’s Level 3 Workforce Diploma
The Communication Trust has successfully established 7 units on the Qualifications and Credits Framework and is now working to support the delivery of these units.
For the first time a speech, language and communication unit has been included as a mandatory part of initial training for early years practitioners as part of the new Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce, which became available in September 2010.
This diploma is due to be taught to over 10,000 early years workers by 2015.
To support the delivery of the unit, Early Years Mandatory Pathway Unit 5, ‘Support children’s speech, language and communication’, the Trust developed free, expertly written materials for trainers and learners. These materials include video footage, activities and handbooks and are available to download at www.talkingpoint.org.uk/eymp
Speech, Language and Communication Award
Additionally to this The Communication Trust is working with an awarding body to package these units up into a new level 3 Award entitled: ‘Supporting Children and Young People's Speech, Language and Communication’. This award will be made up of three units: two mandatory and a third from the list below.
The aim of the Award is to make as great and positive an impact as possible on the communication development of children across the country through enabling members of the entire children's workforce to gain accredited continued professional development in speech, language and communication.
The Award will enable all learners to:
• understand the importance of speech, language and communication
• understand and support children’s speech, language and communication development
• recognise children who may have speech, language and communication needs
Learners will also be able to choose a particular area to focus on as part of the Award out of the following:
• supporting children and young people with speech, language and communication needs
• supporting the communication development of children learning more than one language
• understand the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people with behaviour, emotional and social difficulties
• working with parents, carers and families to support their children's speech, language and communication development
We are awaiting final confirmation of the Award but we hope it will be available, along with supporting materials, from September 2011. If you are interested, or would like more information please contact Eve Wagg at ewagg@thecommunicationtrust.org.uk
